wuyi ensemble
by adagio teas
(28 reviews)Wuyi Ensemble, known as Da Hong Pao or Wuyi rock tea, is a roasted oolong tea from the Wuyi mountains in Fujian province, China. The high fire treatment gives Wuyi oolong its specific smoky and minerally character. This is a beautifully balanced and complex tea with a deep, yet faint, ripe fruitiness in the background. The flavor is slightly honey-floral and nutty, with hints of white sesame, cinnamon and sweetened burdock root. There is a lingering sweet caramel aftertaste due to the high fire roasting technique. Wuyi Ensemble oolong is warming and satisfying. Being a good digestive tea it goes well with food or sweets. It is perfect for multiple infusions so you can tease out many layers of intriguing flavor. Steep at 195°F for 3-5 minutes

I found this a bit too earthy on the first brew. The second brew was more to my liking, especially after adding a teaspoon of honey.

I don't have the refined palate, so I don't get the aromas and flavors that others do. I steeped for 3 min @ 165. The tea was easy to drink, no bitterness. I like green Oolongs better.

Love this tea! Morning or late night highly enjoyable. I steep at just under boiling but only for a minute (the times listed on the bags are overkill in my opinion - the subtleties are lost in the bitterness that ensues from a long steep). Delicious sweet earthiness, and almost slight smokiness from the high roasting. Again reminiscent of Hoji-cha or kugi-cha from Japan, but with a more floral aspect. Goes well with toast & jam at breakfast, or chocolate for late night sipping. But complete and delectable on its own.

Too much of a mineral taste for my liking. Tasted like someone had dumped gravel into my tea.

This is a lovely tea with mineral and nutty flavors. It needs no sweetener. I steeped at 190 degrees for 4 minutes and was able to get multiple steeps.

This had a distinct mineral taste. I was able to re-steep multiple times. 195 F x 3 then 4 min.

One of my favorite teas! Mineral/earthy notes meld with sweet caramel and malty vibes. A staple in my tea stash! 200F, 3 minutes. Lovely tea!

What a lovely tea. It has a light, floral aroma. The flavors are a little toasty and smooth with a bit of mineral and some sweet fruit. Quite a variety of tastes as it cools and in subsequent brews.

This tea doesn't have as strong of a mineral "rock" flavor as I like in Wuyi teas. This is more on the nutty side.

Nice plain oolong. Minerally and warm tasting. Pleasant enough on its own, but not special enough that I would want to have it again; Adagio has much better teas, at least for me.

Close to a black tea. It's not bad, but it doesn't have a very "green" taste.

I was a little offput by how earthy the smell was, but the taste was a solid, subtle flavor

The floral notes in Wuyi Ensemble are clearly noticeable, but no so pronounced that they detract from the earth, smoke, and spice notes (a problem I have with some oolongs). This is a smooth, nicely balanced tea - I enjoyed it.

My favorite chinese oolong that ive tried. This is excellent and the minerally flavor is delicious and makes me want to eat cookies with this. Perfect for unwinding after a meal!

I was pleasantly surprised by this tea. I can definitely taste the mineral flavour, although the scent reminds me of Genmai Cha. Smooth, easy going, a nice plain tea.

One of the best plain black teas I've ever had. It's a shame that it's so expensive, but that's not gonna stop me.
EDIT: I bought a sample of this tea and it's even better than I remember. It's totally worth the price.

Very minerally taste, with hints of smoke. Like, imagine camping by a mountain stream, and that's what this tastes like.

I really couldn't appreciate the flavor of this tea. I couldn't taste any of the flavors described.

A very earthy and nutty cup of tea. Not sweet but rather smoky and rich. On later steeping more of the floral comes out in the tea and the smokiness wanes.

A very earthy tasting tea! I didn’t taste any of the caramel that the description says, but I enjoyed it nonetheless.
