 (7 reviews)

type: green

origin: china

caffeine: medium

price level: $$$$

Softly sweet with nut-like notes, this China green large pearl takes its time to fully unfurl. Great as a travel or outdoor brewing tea with no need to premeasure. These pearls weigh an average of 4 to 5 grams- enough for two cups or a small teapot. Steep at 180°F for 3 minutes

I love to watch this tea brew! It unfurls beautifully. The taste is sweet with a slightly nut-like flavor, a bit woodsy with a green slant to it. Very nice. A bit lighter than I prefer, but a very nice cup of tea.

I have to re-brew this one at a higher temp with less water. I put it in a small glass teapot with one ball and brewed it at 165 for 3 minutes (my bad, but I always brew looseleaf greens at 165). It was really weak and I put it back in for several more minutes, but was still too weak to get any appreciable flavor aside from a subtle green smokiness. Not giving up in this one, as I have several more balls to play with! (that did not sound right, lol)

This is the first time I've reviewed a tea and the only reason I'm doing it is to back up what's already been said here. If you brew this tea by the instructions given, you're just wasting your money. Three minutes at 180 will get you slightly scented water. I tried several variations, increasing temperature up to 200 and steeping up to 5 minutes. What finally worked for me is to use a larger pot (I went from 8 oz to 12 oz) and using two balls for the pot, then steeping for 4 minutes at 200 degrees. Once I did that, I got a full flavored pot and got strong second and third steepings. The fourth steeping was a bit weak to my taste, but I like a full flavored green. One ball per 8 oz. cup or pot might work for someone who likes a lighter taste (and there is a nice, grassy flavor once you get it there) but I'd suggest starting with 4 minutes at 200 degrees and then vary from there.

Its a fun tea, but the flavor is not my favorite. Its too vegetal and unsettlingly sweet
