lapsang souchong
by twinings
(11 reviews)Lapsang Souchong, also referred to as smoked tea, is one of the worlds' oldest and most distinctive black teas. The tea is grown in the Wuyi Mountains in the Fujian Province of China and is made by only a select number of estates. Once a very secretive process, Lapsang Souchong is prepared using the same manual techniques today that have been passed down from generation to generation. After the tea is plucked, the leaves are withered over cypress or pine wood fires. They are later placed into barrels so that the smoky aroma intensifies. As a final step, the leaves are placed into flat wicker baskets and positioned on bamboo trays over smoky pine fires, where they dry and absorb even more aroma. The finished tea leaves are thick and black and when steeped in hot water, produce a rich tea with a unique, smoky taste.

I was given this as a gift with some other teas so I decided to try. I couldn't get past the smell of the smokey flavor to drink more than just a few sips. I don't care for the taste of this tea.

This was my first lapsang souchong and it caused me to fall in love with it. Very smoky and delicious! Like barbecue as a tea.

I don't really like lapsang to drink, but I do like using it in sauces and marinades. It adds a nice taste to most meats, and bagged tea is just the easiest way to go abut using it. Too lazy to strain out leaves.

Very smoky smelling tea. I will say it kind of reminds me of smoked salmon, but once it has steeped, it's just a really nice tea, complex and rich. Not the best lapsang for sure, but if I see it at the grocery store, I don't hesitate to buy if I'm running low.

The smokiness tastes so artificial that it's hard to enjoy the tea for what it is.
EDIT: I've since learned I'm not a Lapsang Souchong fan of any sort but I stand by this review. This is a bad example of a tea steeped in tradition and it deserves better.

I LOVE THIS TEA! It has a nice campfire smoke aroma, and a great smoky flavour.

The smokiness tastes artificial almost like a bbq. There are many other options that are way better

It's kind of like drinking smoke? Lapsang is very much a "love it or leave it" kind of tea.
